On the way up to Bedani Meadows during the Royal Pilgrimage: Garhwal, Himalayas

The Royal Pilgrimage of the Goddess Nandadevi, which takes place once every twelve years, is a ritual procession symbolising the bridal journey from her parental home at Nauti, in the foothills, to the dwelling of her husband, Lord Shiva, in the high Himalayas. The arduous three week trek is led by a four-horned ram which, according to local legend, is miraculously born in the months before the pilgrimage is due to set off. It rained constantly throughout the journey and the black umbrella became an essential piece of kit as well as a constant companion.
