All the monks come together to celebrate the aniversary of the death of a Vaishnavite saint: Majuli, Assam
Vaishnavite worship was propagated in Assam by Sankaradeva in the 16th century. Although not a totally new ideology he moulded it to suit Assamese society at the time. It was essentially part of the bhakti movement of devotional worship celebrating the divine concept of the one God. It is a beautifully simple doctrine devoid of elaborate rituals and the inside of the temple or prayer hall reflects this. Apart from a model of Gorunda set on a plinth at one of the entrances there are no decorations or brightly painted icons. It is in this austere hall that the monks worship at least 4 times a day chanting, clapping and singing in praise of Him.
