The iron bowl is a multi-purpose vessel and is used for eating as well as drinking. This came in particularly handy during the early days of Sikhism, when Sikhs were being persecuted by India's Mughal rulers and had to lead a nomadic lifestyle as a result, much like the present-day Nihangs.
