It is ten years since I was last at Hola Mohalla in Anandpur Sahib. it was great to see that these celebrations were as vibrant as ever, attracting millions from around Punjab and further afield. It was good to meet up with people whom I've met on my travels through Punjab with the Nihangs and a great opportunity to thank them for their generosity in providing me with the standard Sikh hospitality of food, shelter and friendship.

Many visitors to the Dal Lake just see the tourist side of it. The is though a whole commercial and merchant aspect too: a market, fishermen, small industries and shops all serving the lake community. Everything is available on the lake, and small market gardens sit on reclaimed land.

Driving about half an hour outside Srinagar in the first two weeks of November you begin to smell the saffron and see its carpets of purple blue flowers either side of the road. Then when you stand in the field you are intoxicated by the saffron. The harvest is a family affair with a festival atmosphere, with whole families working together on their fields...
